AOC arrested during abortion rights protest at the US Supreme Court

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and other Democratic members of Congress were arrested at a pro-choice protest yesterday.

During an abortion rights protest outside the US Supreme Court yesterday, Democratic politician, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and a number of her colleagues were arrested by authorities. Video footage has emerged of AOC being led away from Supreme Court grounds, where the decision to overturn Roe v Wade was made last month.

As reported by The Guardian, AOC and notable congress members, including Carolyn Maloney, Cori Bush and Ilhan Omar, gathered with civilians for a peaceful protest in support of abortion rights outside the building. They were heard chanting, “we won’t go back” and “our bodies, our choice.”

Regarding the protest, New York Democrat, Carolyn Maloney who was among those arrested, stated the following: “I have the privilege of representing a state where reproductive rights are respected and protected – the least I can do is put my body on the line for the 33 million women at risk of losing their rights.”

The direct action for the protest was initiated by the American social justice organisation, CDP (Center for Popular Democracy), who also livestreamed the event. According to their reports, a total of 18 Congress members were arrested, 17 of them being women.
