The genius that is Prince had already recorded, produced and released five albums by the time Purple Rain came into existence. This cohesive musical masterpiece spent a staggering 24 weeks at No.1 and sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.
Selling out stadiums at 25, the sex-funk god was an extremely hardworking, dedicated musician known for his far-reaching falsettos and high pitched screams. Prince first signed a three-record contract with Warner Records, however, he went on to release 39 albums before his death in 2017.
Prince had an enormous capacity to work. To facilitate his constant recording output, he built his own recording studio complex in his native Minneapolis - Paisley Park.
From his headquarters, he was able to take complete control of his career and musical craft. He was an artist and record producer in the truly modern sense; he regularly played every instrument on his records. The key difference that set him apart from almost everyone else: he possessed virtuosic talent in every aspect of the craft.
Beyond his recording career, Prince and his live band was a force to be reckoned with. From the late '70s until his death, the Prince live juggernaut was a constant presence on the world touring circuit.
Prince has an enduring legacy as one of the most influential artists of all time.
