Tkay Maidza is an Adelaide-based singer-songwriter and rapper, who combines a rapid-fire flow with colourful, forward-thinking production.
Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Tkay Maidza moved with her family to Australia at the age of five, living in Perth, Kalgoorlie, and Whyalla before setting in Adelaide.
Tkay made her breakthrough at the age of 17 with the release of her debut single Brontosaurus. The following year she dropped a mixtape, Switch Lanes, the title track of which would go on to make an appearance in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2014. Two more tracks from the mixtape charted on the ARIA Singles Chart, with M.O.B. hitting certified gold. Her debut album, Tkay, was released in 2016 and debuted at #20 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Tkay Maidza has been nominated for three ARIA Awards, and won a MTV Europe Music Award in 2018 for Best Australian Act. She's toured and collaborated with artists as diverse as Charli XCX, Killer Mike, Martin Solveig, SBTRKT and Troye Sivan. Her latest single, Awake was in collaboration with upcoming experimental rapper JPEGMAFIA as she continues to avoid definitions and explore the boundaries of hip-hop.
In 2020, she was signed by British indie label 4AD, which is home to the likes of Aldous Harding, Big Thief, Future Islands, The National and more.
