Austin Powell chats his sultry latest single No Vacancy

It’s been a couple of weeks now since we first laid ears on Austin Powell’s latest single No Vacancy… and ever since then, we’ve had it spinning on repeat. The track is a soulful and sultry soul-pop gem that we haven’t been able to resist.

So, fresh off the track’s release, we caught up with Powell to chat all about it, the process of collaboration, and what the future holds.

Hot off the release of his irresistible latest single No Vacancy, we caught up with LA-based artist Austin Powell for a chat.

HAPPY: Hey Austin, how’s it going? What are you up to at the moment?

AUSTIN: Hey! I’ve been good. Lately, I’ve been promoting my new single No Vacancy and working on another collaboration with one of my co-stars on FBE’s React, Jeannie Mai.

HAPPY: We’re loving No Vacancy! How does it feel having the track out there in the world?

AUSTIN: It feels great. I love hearing people’s reaction to the track. It’s definitely a more mellow, soulful sound and I’m excited that people have been digging it. It’s always a relief to put something out because then it’s out of my hands and I can move on to the next project.

HAPPY: Could you tell us a bit about the song?

AUSTIN: This song is about two new lovers who meet each other on a night out. They’re feeling one another, so they decide to spend all weekend at a hotel. It’s based on an experience I once had. I really wanted to give the song that feeling of meeting someone new that you can’t take your eyes off of.

HAPPY: This is the latest in a string of great singles from you. Did you approach this new single differently at all to past material?

AUSTIN: This one was a bit different because it was my first time working with Abigail. We sat down for a session at my place and I knew immediately she was a massive talent. We were able to write the song together in a couple of hours and I started on the production of the track by the end of the session. She’s a total natural and a pleasure to work with. The major difference was incorporating both of our distinct vibes into the song.

HAPPY: We’re loving Abigail Barlow’s vocals! How did that collaboration come about?

AUSTIN: She’s incredible. We met through some mutual friends and I heard that she did music so I just asked her if she wanted to collaborate. She said yes. It was the simplest collaboration in the world, truthfully. Sometimes the most serendipitous projects are the best.

HAPPY: Are there any particular artists you’re really loving at the moment?

AUSTIN: So many artists are on my playlist right now: Bazzi, Charlie Puth, Daniel Caesar, Ruel, Kali Uchis, Frank Ocean, Tyler the Creator, and the list goes on forever.

HAPPY: What’s next for Austin Powell? Any other exciting plans in the works?

AUSTIN: Next up, I’m working on a couple of collaborations, one with Jeannie as I mentioned, and a couple more I can’t talk about yet. I’m also producing some more singles to put out by the end of the year.

HAPPY: Cheers for the chat!

AUSTIN: Cheers to you guys!
