Australia’s weirdest baby names of 2021

Australia’s most popular baby names of 2021 have been revealed.

McCrindle Research has announced ‘Australia’s Top Baby Names 2021’ and the data has pointed out a few of the favourite unique names millennials are giving their newborns.

The top two names were Oliver and Charlotte. Pretty standard, cute and common baby names. Now let’s get into the weird ones.

It is hypothesised that new parents are trying to think up something special because they want their kids to stand out.

“Millennial parents also grew up with a lot of Sarahs and Matthews in their school classrooms,” Social Researcher Ashley Fell said.

The research showed that the name Sarah dropped 69 places in the last decade with Matthew dropping 52 places.

A lot of the names that are trending and gaining more popularity weren’t even in the top 100 baby names 10 years ago.

Names with an asterisk beside them weren’t in the top 100 in 2010.

It seems that even though the royals have no direct impact on millennials lives, they’ve wormed their way into pop culture enough that names like Louis and Archie are sitting at the top of the list.

Another trend has been noted that new parents have a strong tendency to name their baby girls after colours and botanicals with Violet, Poppy and Delilah as popular choices.

But of course, as is the way with millennials, there must be a point of difference and uniqueness so, a shit tonne of new parents seemed to try to find the most unusual name for their newborn, without just closing their eyes and pointing at the fruit bowl.

“Parents of Generation Alpha (Gen Y) have more access to information than any other generation of parents in history and are influenced by more than just family and religious traditions. They are drawing on social media and popular culture influences, blogs, websites and even baby naming apps. The first-time parents of today were likely to have grown up with several classmates with the same name as them, and so they are drawing on a wider range of more unique and creative names, for their children, and daughters especially.” Fell noted.
