Adelaide band Broken Waves take us to the shoreline, pulling the curtain back on the making of their beach-bound music video for The Divide.
Peering behind the curtain of a music video is like getting an all-access pass to a tantalizing world of creative chaos, where the magic happens, the sweat drips, and the genius unfolds in a kaleidoscope of sights and sounds that leave you craving for more.
Broken Waves have given us just that with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the music video for their recent single, The Divide. Released at the tail-end of last year, the Adelaide band’s latest track serves as a compelling portrait of unrequited love, with frontman Ben Lyons-Reid pleading for reciprocity atop a groovy bassline and backing harmonies. “If you need me,” Lyons-Reid yearns repeatedly on The Divide’s earworm hook, “just don’t push me away.”
Despite having released some ten tracks since their breakout year in 2020, The Divide feels like Broken Waves’ official arrival. To celebrate the track, Broken Waves accompanied The Divide with an official music video, offering a sense of occasion for a track that crystallises the band’s forthright lyricism and funky production. The clip was directed by Henry Evans in his debut music video, and traces the isolation that arises from an imbalanced romance.
The video opens with a beach-bound subject – played by Anna Lynn — as she scrawls in a diary, pours red wine and talks frantically to her mirror reflection. After enjoying a shoreline stroll, Lynn retreats to a bathtub, where the video’s closing moments offer a portrait of the many emotions that accompany tenuous love. “The Divide is ultimately about being in a relationship with someone who’s circumstances are causing it to end,” the band said in a press statement.
“[We] felt it was important to represent both sides of the relationship as both partners’ stories deserve to be heard.” The video was produced collaboratively with Evans and remaining Broken Waves bandmates Will Physentzou, Declan Oetjen, Heath Oetjen and Amber Timms. The Divide marks the band’s first single to receive the music video treatment, and the single is accompanied by a behind-the-scenes look at its creation in the studio. Watch that above.
