Cameron Winter’s Carnegie Hall performance is getting a proper release.
There are still plenty of people who aren’t in the Cameron Winter camp. I’m not entirely sure why. Maybe they’re holding out on principle. Maybe they’re jealous. Maybe they just haven’t caught up yet.
Either way, I’m firmly in.
I didn’t get a chance to catch the Geese frontman when he landed in Sydney recently, which still feels like a bit of a miss, so the announcement of Cameron Winter’s first live album, Live at Carnegie Hall, is going some way towards making up for it.
The album captures Winter’s sold-out December 2025 performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall, where he became one of the youngest solo artists to headline the venue’s main auditorium.
And while Carnegie Hall usually brings to mind a certain level of ceremony, Winter apparently did the whole thing in very Cameron Winter fashion: alone at the piano, hunched over the keys, often with his back to the audience, pulling apart songs from his debut solo album Heavy Metal and putting them back together again.
Heavy Metal was already the record that pushed Winter well beyond the Geese universe.
It’s strange, theatrical and occasionally beautiful in a way that doesn’t seem particularly interested in being easy listening.
Winter’s voice alone has probably launched a thousand arguments at this point, but that’s also part of what makes him interesting. There aren’t many people making music right now who you can identify within about five seconds.
The Carnegie Hall set includes versions of ‘Love Takes Miles’, ‘Cancer of the Skull’, ‘The Rolling Stones’ and ‘$0’, alongside three previously unreleased compositions.
Across 11 tracks, Live at Carnegie Hall catches Winter at a pretty ridiculous point in his career: still young enough that headlining Carnegie Hall feels slightly absurd, but already carrying himself like someone who was always going to end up there.
And for those of us who missed the recent Australian shows, it’s probably the next best thing.
No, sitting at home with a record isn’t quite the same as watching Cameron Winter bend himself over a piano in front of a silent room. But turn the lights down, put the phone somewhere else and use your imagination.
Cameron Winter – Live at Carnegie Hall arrives October 9 via Partisan Records / Play It Again Sam, with digital, CD and vinyl editions available to pre-order now.
