Melbourne-based duo Charm of Finches head to captivating retreats on latest single Atlantis.
Charm of Finches have today (November 23) released Atlantis, the first taste of their upcoming fourth studio album.
The moody and cinematic single sees the dream pop duo — composed of sisters Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes — inhabit an emotional underwater soundscape, complete with captivating lyricism and cinematic production.
Serving as an exercise in sonic world-building Atlantis creates a world of its own, connoting what the Charm of Finches describe in a press statement as “a place to retreat to when overcome by intense emotions.”
That evocative description is on full display throughout the track, which is carried by brooding instrumentation and an enrapturing vocal performance.
“We’ve witnessed friends we care about sinking into dark places, like being underwater,” the pair explained. “Water has always been a recurring motif in our music to express the fluidity and intensity of feeling.”
While that sinking feeling is translated with expert finesse on Atlantis, there’s also a warmness that emanates throughout the song, helped along by regal strings and harmonies so ascendant they could touch the heavens.
“Atlantis holds you close,” the pair coo reassuringly amid life’s struggles, “silence is the sound.” The single was produced by Daniel Ledwell, and recorded in the rural woods of rural Nova Scotia, Canada.
It is accompanied by a self-directed music video, which follows Charms of Finches as they sing fireside and traverse frozen lakes and ethereal woodlands.
Atlantis comes ahead of Charm of Finches’ imminent string of shows, which will see the duo perform seven sets throughout Australia throughout the remainder of 2023 and into the new year.
Charm of Finches will serve as the support act of Katie Noonan’s Elixir tour in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, with festival sets also slated for Victoria and Queensland. Find tickets to the shows here.
Atlantis is the first single lifted from Charm of Finches’ fourth studio album, which serves as the follow-up to 2021’s Wonderful Oblivion. In the meantime, get swept up in the otherworldly reverie that is Charm of Finches’ new single Atlantis below.
