Coco Solid is solo project of Jessica Hansell, who hails from the stormy lands of Auckland/Aotearoa, New Zealand. Upon listening to her track 2 wise 2 wed ?, my first impression of this electro pop is not too dissimilar from new wavers; Blondie and Swedish pop act; La Roux. But, I am also blissfully taken back to 90’s Madchester, with her showering of funky house beats sprinkled with old school hip hop.
A wearer of many hats, Coco Solid is not only a musician, but an artist, writer and self-proclaimed ‘philosoflygirl’; an identity which alludes to her annual zine of the same name. I imagine these pursuits keep Coco pretty busy, but not busy to have a backlog of musical projects, being a member of two separate bands; Badd Energy and The Parallel Dance Ensemble. Differing in genres, Badd Energy, deliver a garagey guitar + drum heavy sound, whereas, The Parallel Dance Ensemble are more of a disco – rap, similar to Coco Solids solo pursuits.
Coco Solid has just returned to New Zealand from a year in Melbourne and is currently writing new material, which will be available mid this year.
