Bautista replaces Ryan Hurst after an on-set injury forced Amazon to recast Kratos and reshoot his scenes.
Dave Bautista is officially stepping into the boots of one of gaming’s angriest gods.
It is reported that the actor will lead Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming God of War series as Kratos, taking over from Ryan Hurst.
Hurst was originally announced as the legendary Spartan warrior in January 2026.
But a torn bicep sustained on set required surgery and pushed production delays into 2027. Amazon and Sony subsequently decided to recast the role, with Bautista emerging as the new God of War.
Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the series, which the studio plans to film back-to-back.
Production originally began in Vancouver in February, but Bautista’s casting means the cameras can now get moving again, with filming expected to resume in the coming weeks.
There is, however, one rather expensive catch: the production will have to reshoot every scene featuring Hurst.
Bautista certainly brings plenty of experience playing characters who prefer solving problems with their fists. After roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune and Army of the Dead, the actor has built a reputation for bringing plenty of physicality to imposing characters.
Making him a fitting choice to wield Kratos’ infamous Blades of Chaos.
The God of War series is being produced by Amazon and Sony. They will bring the hugely popular PlayStation franchise to live action.
For Bautista, it’s a particularly brutal promotion: he’s gone from playing gods and monsters to becoming the God of War.
