Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss to head new Star Wars trilogy

Earlier today, Disney confirmed that there would be a new Star Wars trilogy and it will be coming from Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications summit that the next round of films are set to be released after December’s The Rise of Skywalker.

Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have been hired by Disney to steer the new trilogy of Star Wars films. Mistake or saving grace?

The confirmation follows recent rumours that Disney is going all in on Star Wars, Marvel, and live action remakes for the near future, much to the dismay of (most) fans.

Rian Johnson was also speculated to be filming the trilogy although after the narrative failure of The Last Jedi, there has been of much debate around who would be the better project directors. As for David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the Game Of Thrones seasons post-George R.R. Martin have been satisfactory at best.

As for what the trilogy will cover, a lot of fans have been formulating that it will be an early, early prequel, dating well before the George Lucas films and going back to the Knights Of The Old Republic.

Thus there is much to look forward to, or fear, depending where you stand on the writers (the internet has been aflare with criticisms of the last Game Of Thrones season being too rushed or too ‘dark’).

As for Star Wars, The Rise of Skywalker hits cinemas December 20th.
