The number of female head coaches in Australian funded sports has nearly tripled since 2021, yet “appalling, misogynistic and abusive” behaviour remains a persistent barrier, according to a new Australian Institute of Sport report.
The ABC reports that while women now hold over 25 percent of head coaching roles, up from single digits four years ago, AIS Director Matti Clements insists the figure is still inadequate.
The report reveals female coaches face systemic challenges including career-family conflicts, recruitment bias, and hostile environments.
Paralympic legend Louise Sauvage, a coach for over two decades, says communication and tailored support are vital for progression, particularly for coaches with disabilities.
However, professional codes lag behind, with AFLW, NRLW, and A-League Women featuring minimal female representation.
Clements emphasises diversity isn’t just ethical but a competitive advantage, urging sporting leaders to drive cultural change ahead of the Brisbane Games.
“We want the best people coaching our athletes,” she said, “whether female or male.”
