Before Neon Alley deliver a night of fresh, fierce femmes kicking it to the beat, we thought it’d be darn swell idea to gain some insight into the ladies that know what’s what. Nussy, Fluir and MYAMI and Evangeline hereby bequeath some insights into the muses that have them swooning. From production techniques, timbre, lyrical verve and arrangement choices, it’s about the intellect, heart and feels making for some real good music.
Nussy, Fluir, Evangeline and MYAMI are fierce femmes that know how to kick it to the beat. Before they tear up The Howler this May for Neon Alley, we asked them to muse on the fellow female artists that make them swoon.
NUSSY
Owl Eyes – Nightswim
I love how the verses of this track sound so dark but then the chorus just open up and all of a sudden there’s this beautiful resolution I especially love when in the bridge she sings, “this night swim won’t last for an eternity.” Harmonically, it is so typically joyous but juxtaposed with this almost sad lyric, it feels nostalgic to me.
Alpine – Up For Air
The lyrics of this one get me every single time. It’s just so wonderfully relatable. Everyone has had that moment where they think this person make them uncontrollable and it’s amazingly liberating. I also love the unison lead vocal on this track. I think it’s something so interesting that Alpine do which is so rare to see these days – it’s so rad to see two lead chicks doing their thing.
GL – Take Me Back
So 80s! I play this track regularly in my DJ set in between Blondie, Gloria Estefan and Stevie Nicks and it just fits so well! It’s authentic, yet innovative and I just adore that about it
FLUIR
Alice Ivy – Touch
I love Alice’s unique production on this track how she adds layer upon layer whilst maintaining the quality and simplicity of the track. This track would be well received late at night or in the early hours of the morning.
Gretta Ray – Unexpected Feeling
Gretta’s voice sits perfectly within this track accompanied by the minimalistic acoustic guitar backing, leaving room for her vocals to breathe. I first heard about Gretta Ray after she played at Parlour Gigs in Melbourne. Acoustic singer/songwriters still hit close to home with me as it’s how I first started out.
Sammi Constantine – Let You Go
Once again, I am drawn to Sammi’s vocals. I love the way the vocals allow the listener to slowly warm to the song before dropping that chorus which slaps you in the face (in a good way). I look forward to seeing Sammi make her mark in Australia’s music scene in the years to come.
MYAMI
Wafia – Heartburn
I love Wafia’s vocal tone in this one and I think her voice blends perfectly with the production. I think Wafia and Ta-ku nailed it- dreamteam. I saw her recently in Melbourne and she didn’t miss a beat.
Elizabeth Rose – Shoulda Coulda Woulda
Elizabeth has recently come out with some nostalgic 90’s pop, Mariah Carey ‘Honey’ kind of vibes. As a Mariah fan, I love it. Harmonised backing vocals that respond and converse with the lead vocals, finger clicks, a beat you could roller-skate to, so good! M-Phazes beats haven’t disappointed yet, but this one in particular hit the spot.
Meg Mac – Every Lie
I know it’s not the latest, but I shazammed this track like crazy and I still love this song. Meg Mac has an incredible set of pipes and such a powerful presence, if you ever get the chance to see her live, DO IT! The opening harmonies are what hooked me.
EVANGELINE
Nicole Millar – Cover Me
Ok.. So Nicole’s EP is just next level. She is literally the female version of the Weeknd. I love this track because it is kind of the slower more haunting track of the ep. Her voice is like a silk pillow dipped in glitter and happiness and you get this weird palm tree in the wind sway about when you listen to it. #GirlPOWER
OK Sure – Apparition (Miles Brown)
Tash Sultana – Gemini
