‘Happy For You’ is one for the books.
Irish post-punk favourites Fontaines D.C. gave the Leeds Festival crowd an exclusive peek into their new song on Saturday.
The setlist was stacked with old and new hits, opening with Dogrel’s ‘Boys in the Better Land’ and Romance’s ‘Here’s the Thing’, but the real talking point of the show was the unreleased track ‘Happy For You’ debut.
It’s the third taster so far from their upcoming fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber, and they sure know how to keep listeners everywhere amped for the October release.
‘Happy For You’ is a wistful goodbye to a past relationship, exploring the bittersweet feeling of accepting that you no longer have a place in someone’s heart.
Lead singer Grian Chatten repeats that ‘I’m just happy for you, I swear’ in what may be the least convincing, gut-wrenchingly relatable manner possible, sure to be a big hit with nostalgics looking out train windows everywhere.
Lead single ‘Marianne’ is the only streamable Dopamine Chamber release so far, dropped on August 18. It provided fans with a stark contrast to Romance’s punchy lead single, ‘Starburster’ and set the precedent for an exciting new era in the Fontaines D.C. discography.
The second teaser came in the form of ‘Six Shot Morning’, debuted at Baluarte de la Candelaria on August 9 alongside ‘Marianne’. It’s a foreboding synth track about the permanence of the digital world, with anxiety-inducing lyrics like “It’s you and I living for a million years” and “Melancholy hearts in a motion film’.
James Ford produced Dopamine Chamber, after the success of his previous project with the band, Romance. Ford is also known for his work with Arctic Monkeys and Florence and the Machine.
In a press release, Grian Chatten explained that the album is set to be an experimental exploration of emotional releases in an age of technological dominance, political tension and a rapidly deteriorating environment
We haven’t seen Fontaines D.C. down under since March 2025, when they played five headline shows with British five-piece Shame, as well as headlining the unbeatable lineup at Wollongong’s Yours and Owls Festival.
Fingers are crossed nation-wide that the boys will return to Australia in the near future with their new arsenal of post-punk hits.
The countdown is on for Dopamine Chamber, set to release on October 16.
