When I first heard of Tyler Barker’s musical pseudonym Ghost Cub, my scattered brain was immediately filled with flashback images of Fight Club, and the film’s enigmatic yet unreal lead Tyler Durden. Thankfully, the two Tylers are actually relatively separate entities…
Tyler Barker is not Brad Pitt, he’s a guy from Melbourne. He started working on Ghost Cub as a natural response to his changing music taste – once grounded in indie, acoustic stuff, he began gravitating toward hip-hop and electronic production. Armed with a couple of guitars and a loop pedal, Ghost Cub was born. His most recent track, Pulsar, was released in January, and is such an impressive export from a bedroom-based producer. I’m a sucker for spoken word samples, and although I don’t know where the samples on Pulsar are pulled from, they compliment the track so nicely.
While the swirling, cool guitar work provides a solid and pretty foundation, a grainy sound clip narrates, “my relationship with other people is not a close one. I like people and I want to be around people, but I don’t feel deeply towards them. I try, but I don’t…”
It sounds like some kinda wack interview with a Ted Bundy type. This track perfectly hits the mark between light and dark, pleasant and haunting. I’m excited to hear more from Ghost Cub. In the meantime, stream Pulsar below.
