If you’re a fan of getting lost in acoustic-laden melodies of thick and mesmerising dream pop that rolls over the hills like soft pillowy clouds, take a listen to High Highs. The indie-pop duo from Sydney are Jack Milas (vocalist) and Oli Chang (electronics). The High Highs make gently sweeping, airy indie pop that will make you float higher and higher and higher…
Homegrown boys High Highs are back with their mesmerising brand new EP Ocean to City.
Formed by Milas and Chang in Sydney in 2010, the homegrown boys released their first eponymous EP in October 2011 and then their debut album Open Season in January 2013. The widely acclaimed album featured the oft-featured on silver- and gold-screen single Open Season, a rolling, upbeat indie folk track accompanied by soft, yearning vocals and a twinkling piano/guitar melody. Their whirlwind year included playing Laneway, Vivid Sydney, Austin’s SXSW and touring with the likes of Vampire Weekend, Sky Ferreira, How To Dress Well, Stars and Oh Land. Since Open Season, High Highs have been gently floating below the surface, undeniably working on more airy wonderments for the pleasure of our ears.
The now Brooklyn-based duo have returned with their latest release Ocean To City EP,the long-awaited follow-up to their nostalgia-fuelled Open Season.Their just-released three-track EP (get it for free here!) features softly sweeping offerings of dream pop, crafted around atmospheric instrumentation, delicate sprinklings of piano and Milas’ pensive, ghostly vocals that drift hazily between the woozy harmonies.
Titular track, Ocean To City is a magnificent indie pop ride driven by wavering guitar chords that swirl with haunting layered vocals and light and ambient airy melodies. Beautifully powerful and quiet moments permeate Glamorous Party, constructed around lonely piano and delicate gossamer vocals. Catch The Windis a similar affair, all echoing vocals and soft and melodic, slow-burning rhythms. Characterised by their daydream-inducing light, airy folk-pop, High High’s Ocean To City EP conveys a dreamy ambience as splendid as their debut.
High Highs are currently working on their forthcoming second studio album in Sydney and New York. Can’t wait? Give a listen to earlier single Movement, a teaser from the upcoming album.
