Hyla are a band on everyone’s radar. Bringing forth a complex, lyrical and haunting take on pop, there’s a distinctly Australian narrative vein running through their music, making for a seriously comforting listening experience without catharsis.
What’s even better is that they have an equally impressive ability to make a killer music video, and their latest release Swam Out is no exception.
With gripping harmonies and slightly lilting guitar, the track becomes the backdrop for a story of romance and self-discovery. The clip, directed by J’aime Fazackerley, opens with a simple living room performance wrapped in a sheer overlay of a body of water before transforming into a natural escape.
With Swam Out, Hyla blend their effortless performative style with cinematic vision to create a clip with gripping narrative and utmost authenticity.
Not only are we huge fans of the track itself, but also the intent behind the clip is clear. We follow our protagonist through her apparent heartbreak, beginning in the house and then slowly moving towards open water.
While mysterious, the audience is not left lost in a complex story, rather our senses are triggered and the bittersweet visuals are the perfect complement to the already yearning track.
Hyla is the latest project of Alex Hayes, known for his work with bands including Abbe May and The Silents. Currently Hayes is in the process of releasing Hyla’s debut LP OSAKA. The record, produced by Sam Ford (POND, Peter Bibby) is due to be dropped in the later half of 2017 and will feature Swam Out.
Hyla is a project with a bright future. After many years of experience and a swathe of influences including My Bloody Valentine and The Verve, Hayes’ work with Hyla gives to you a fresh and melodic take on shoegazey garage and a sound not to be ignored.
