Formerly Melbourne, now UK-based artist Millington is causing a stir with his very, very listenable new single I Am That.
It’s fitting that the single landed ahead of his European tour dates with the Pierce Brothers, because I can already the crowds singing this chorus back.
I Am That is the new single from singer/songwriter Millington, a life-affirming ballad that you’ll want to shout across the rooftops.
Millington’s 2017 EP Being saw him perform across Australia and the world, including a showcase at the esteemed SXSW. I Am That is the first hint of music we’ve heard from him since, so we’re hoping it’s a sign of things to come.
Similarly to the debut record, Millington’s new single builds to a powerful, vocal-driven chorus that echoes Mumford & Sons or Boy & Bear. A generous backing of guitars and natural sounding percussion helps send the tune straight to the stratosphere, and the payoff is huge.
I Am That saw Millington return to his childhood hometown of Stoke-on-Trent alongside old friend Tom Carter, who engineered, mixed, and co-produced the single alongside the artist. It’s no surprise, then, that I Am That sounds both nostalgic and welcoming from end to end.
Producing music alongside one of your oldest friends is a privilege too few musicians get to act out, but when they do, the results are often heartfelt and genuine. In Millington’s case, that’s exactly what’s happened.
I Am That is out now.
