Stirring the soup of soul, electronica and hip hop with his intriguing voice, Sydney’s Brave had a chat to Tomatrax about his upcoming EP amongst other, rather laconic musings.
Happy: How did your music career start?
Brave: All I can remember is making music, there’s nothing before that.
Happy: What inspired you to become a Musician?
Brave: I wanted to be the piano man Bernie Taupin refers to in Elton John’s Tiny Dancer.
Happy: What made you pick the name Brave?
Brave: It’s descriptive of who I am, serves me as a mantra, and sets the mood for what I’m trying to inspire through my words.
Happy: Why did you pick an alias rather than use your name?
Brave: My name is literally the Maori word for Brave.
Happy: What made you pick What About Me? as your first single?
Brave: Good energy, good message and is a complete contrast to the current popular sound.
Happy: What’s it like to have your first single out?
Brave: Kinda feels like saying hello.
Happy: You have an EP coming out soon, how will the rest of the EP compare with What About Me?
Brave: A complete variety of strong songs that are obviously from the same place. I have a definite sound.
Happy: What was it like to play at the Vivid Festival?
Brave: We had one hell of a light show.
Happy: What’s it like to have a bedroom studio?
Brave: You simply can’t beat the convenience of having a song hit you and then be able to go sit down and start putting it down.
Happy: Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night and feel the need to record a new song?
Brave: Endlessly.
Happy: Do you ever listen to your own music?
Brave: Endlessly.
Happy: What other music do you listen to?
Brave: At the moment I’m listening to 5ths/Jarryd Klapper, an old Animal Collective record and a blank cd titled ‘Jaime’s mix’.
Happy: What do you plan on doing once the EP is out?
Brave: Choose the tracks for the next one, and start writing the one after that.
