With similar haunting vocals as Daughter’s vocalist, Elena Tonra, layered on top of eerie instrumentals, London’s Louise Cunnane, otherwise known as Blooms, is definitely an artist to look out for.
From London are the contemplative, subtle beats of Blooms. Eerie yet comforting at the same time, her songwriting is complex and intriguing.
Her debut EP, If, was released in August this year, and has been included in The Last Mixed Tape’s Top 20 EP’s of 2014 list. Blooms’ popularity has also risen significantly with the recent release of the addictive track Guilty, which is the second Blooms song produced by Dublin producer Kobina.
Blooms’ four-track EP has an overall theme of love and loss, which resonates through the melancholy tone conveyed through the gloomy and atmospheric synth beats. The EP is also remarkably well-written with poignant lyrics describing common emotions surrounding love and relationships. In the first two songs, Lust and Skin there is an identifiable sense of yearning with lines such as, “Lost in lust” and “I need your company”.
If I ponders fearful and doubting thoughts such as “If I wake up alone” and “If I hold onto memories but no one’s hand” and lastly, the EP closes with a soft track with heavy reverb on Cunnane’s vocals as she repeats “this will be the last time”. These last two tracks compliment the first two beautifully as we are provided with the many facets of the complexities of relationships. In fact, Last Time is the kind of song I imagine listening to with a bottle of wine in hand at the end of a relationship when you’ve just had enough.
The delicacy that Blooms delivers is so powerful that it makes her one of those artists that you can listen to in any mood and instantly feel transported into another world; one filled with complete seclusion and an undisturbed serenity. With some shows in London lined up early next year, Blooms is an artist well equipped to go the mile.
