Jack White is making a documentary on the history of recorded music in America, because who the hell else would?

Back in 2015, White partnered with T Bone Burnett and Robert Redford to spearhead American Epic, a three-part documentary series, additional feature film, and recording project focusing on the pioneering days of recorded sound.

The trailer Jack White’s American Epic documentary series, which looks are the origins and history of recorded music in America, is here. Watch below.

The film, titled The American Epic Sessions, features Beck, Nas, Elton John, Alabama Shakes and Willie Nelson amongst many others, utilising recording equipment from the ’20s to pay tribute to the Carter Family, Charlie Patton, Mississippi John Hurt, and more.

You can watch the trailer of the film below:

The recordings made during the The American Epic Sessions, as well as some of the archival music featured in the documentaries, will be made available in a series of soundtracks, released by Legacy Records and Columbia Records.

Legacy will release a companion soundtrack, a 100-song box set, and archival recordings, while Columbia will put out the American Epic Sessions studio performances.

On top of that, Jack White’s Third Man Records will release the Sessions soundtrack and selections of the archival recordings on vinyl (no doubt pressed at his Third Man pressing plant).

It all arrives on May 12. The film will be released in June. Keep your eyes peeled for more dates.

In other Jack White news, he is currently recording a new album in an abandoned house with only a four-track handy. Oh, Jack.
