Jane Tyrrell – Wild Waters

A woman of many talents – vocalist, songwriter, performer and a multi-faceted artist whose disciplines include fine art, art direction and design. Her musicality and artistry can be felt with every pulse in her debut single Wild Waters, as she pursues a solo project. May we introduce to you, the breathtaking Melbournian, Jane Tyrrell.

Jane Tyrrell

One seventh of The Herd, Jane Tyrrell makes alt-psych-folk pop when she isn’t being a babe and poisoning royalty at Kings Landing.

Tyrrell hails from the Aussie Hip Hop super group, The Herd, which formed back in 2001 and are still going strong. The group is made up of artists Ozi Batla (MC), Urthboy (MC),  Unkle Ho (beats), Traksewt (piano accordion, clarinet and beats), Sulo (beats and guitar), Toe-Fu (guitar), Rok Poshtya (bass) and Tyrrell as a vocalist –  their live performance has a reputation for it’s dynamic and unconventional set-up.

But let’s focus on the now. What can we expect from Wild Waters? A rich, expansive experience, which gives off an oceanic electronic meets industrial ambient vibe. You can tell the passion of the Hip Hop culture stays by Tyrrell’s side in this solo endeavor, simply shining through a different genre. Her hybridised sound of psychedelic-folk and alternative-rock may remind you of the likes of Daughter and London Grammar, with Tyrrell’s  experimentation allowing her to manipulate an endearing euphoria.

With her effortless, silky vocals, you can’t help but be roped into Wild Waters, which suggests a rapid of emotion through its name– it’s easy for you to sink and drown into a song of this nature, but Tyrrell’s apathetic optimism allows you to enjoy the lapping of the waves as she keeps your head above the water . This is the first love song Tyrrell has written and in her words it is about the “Anchor and the synergy in our relationship” (quote via Pigeons and Planes).

With lyrics “You always said don’t fight it, we could choose this and rise above, when everything else is spinning out, I got a line to the centre,” the dynamic push and pull that love sparks is clear. Wild Waters has it all –gentle piano lines, ominous chimes of percussion, industrial beats, haunting harmonies,  smothered yet ever compelling guitar and bass lines, surging synth lines, and the sample of gasping for air. All these components work together to create a flawless track with a poignant story to unleash. Tyrrell’s vocals remain the star of the show– it takes a lot to overshadow her presence in a song.
