If you thought you have read some pretty weird headlines this year, this might be the clincher.
Johnny Depp is producing a musical about… Michael Jackson’s glove.
The new production from Johnny Depp takes an in-depth look at Michael Jackson’s life through the perspective of his sequinned glove.
With the release of Leaving Neverland earlier this year and a planned biopic, this musical aims to show “a fresh, revisionist look at the strange forces that shaped Jackson and the scandals that bedevilled him”.
The title of the play seems to sum up everything you need to know… For the Love of Glove: An Unauthorized Musical Fable About the Life of Michael Jackson, as Told by His Glove. Playwright Julien Nitzberg wrote the play as a way to address the many child-abuse allegations against Jackson.
Nitzberg explained a meeting he had with executives, “I said, how’s this? Everything MJ has been accused of has actually been caused by his glove, which is actually an alien from outer space [and] feeds on virgin boy blood. They laughed and said, ‘Can you do the normal version?’”
To make things weirder, the Eventbrite page describes the play as, “the most f’ed up musical you’ll ever see. And it’s got puppets.” Yes, puppets.
Whatever the play may or may not be about, it is certainly confusing and confounding. However, it is definitely a new and original take on the very public life of the King of Pop.
The musical might be a thriller or it might simply be bad. The intriguing production opens on the 25th of January at the Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan theatre in Los Angeles if you want to experience it first hand.
