Your kin are your relatives, but UK guitar band Kins are your friends.
Recently, their single Mockasin’s that was released around April 2011 has been re-released as an EP with two new B-Sides. Throughout the three-tracked compilation made together by the threesome of band members it features three separate vibes. With so many threes, I’m surprised they didn’t name the EP Triple.
The band, made up of Thomas Savage, Alex Knight and Rob Walters, have said that the guitar pop assembly specialise in making sounds similar to the feelings of doubt, muted aggression and detachment, yet in no way do they seem to sound angsty.
A band of friends – aptly named Kins – have got some pretty baller B-Sides they thought they’d share with us all.
Kins, is made up by a kinfolk of band mates, Thomas Savage, Alex Knight and Rob Walters. Kins now make sound from Brighton in the U.K. – home to a similar UK guitar scene of bands like The Kooks and The Maccabees. I should also mention that Kins have a tendency to sound a little like fellow Brits Metronomy in slow motion, listen to The Bay by Metronomy and you might agree. It seems that bands who hail from Brighton, make sound to enlighten.
The single on the EP, Mockasin’s has a strong bass line which creates a tight rhythm section throughout the song. The bass overtone is dense yet coupled with some gentle guitar, the song becomes well balanced and the low end never becomes overbearing. The second song Society is rather more spacious. Short but sweet, electronic echoes and undertones of synth equates to an atmospheric 1 minute and 34 seconds. I sense this song may have been hiding a hand full of shy feelings.
Finally, song number three is aery and floaty – strangely enough I think I hear pelicans and whales somewhere in the background, buried beneath the effected guitars and electric piano licks. With just enough distortion, I begin to gently fall to sleep – perhaps this would be a good song to meditate to?
When Kins aren’t playing music, they’re behind the camera, taking photos and posting them on the web. I think what is most humbling about this band comes down to them sounding as though they truly are what they say they are, friends.
As of late, Kins have been taking photos of pine trees and posting them to social media while hanging with Phatogram as they tour Europe. You’ve just missed them hit up continental europe, but if you’re in The United States next month be sure to check out your friends, Kins – tour dates below.
