Lou Ella chats her new single Summer Of Love

Late last month, when Californian artist Lou Ella unveiled her new single Summer Of Love, we were immediately hooked on her soulful pop sounds.

So fresh off the track’s release, we caught up with the artist herself to chat all about it.

Fresh off the release of her incredible new single Summer Of Love, we caught up with California-based artist Lou Ella for a chat.

HAPPY: Hey, how’s it going? What are you up to at the moment?

LOU: Hey, things are going great. I’m currently working on a new song that is not part of the EP, it’s a song that’s gonna get people moving. I’m already dancing to it alone in my bedroom, I’m going to shoot a video for the song. Toying with the idea of going around LA nightlife with a camera and shooting what happens.

HAPPY: We’re loving Summer Of Love! How does it feel having the track out there in the world?

LOU: It’s exciting! I’ve been getting a lot of love for the song – it’s still the beginning but the numbers are growing every day and a bunch of my fans are adding it to their playlists. I’m definitely feeling it.

HAPPY: Could you tell us a little bit about the song?

LOU: The song on the surface is about good times but it’s also about a toxic relationship. Sounds confusing, I know. Lyrically it’s all about great memories of a summer fling but when I wrote it, I was talking about someone who ended being very bad for me. It’s the sweet cherry on top of a sour cake.

HAPPY: How do you see this new single as being different from past material? If at all…

LOU: This song and the upcoming EP were all about feeling for me, no rules just vibes. Going in the studio I had a vision for each song, I knew the sounds. Past material I’ve released I’m very proud of but I was still dabbling, I hadn’t yet defined the kind of music I wanted to make and perform. This is an ongoing process and will constantly grow, change, evolve. I like the idea of sharing that evolution with fans as opposed to only going out there when everything is perfect.

HAPPY: This is the first track of your upcoming EP… is Summer Of Love a good representation of the other tracks on there? Or do you go down a few different avenues?

LOU: I think the whole EP is built around a similar foundation, percussions are present on all tracks, the piano usually drives, but some songs have a guitar instead, the amazing gospel singers are present on all tracks but one. One’s more rocksteady, one’s more bluesy, one feels like you’re in space. It’s a journey and I’m extremely proud of the EP and cannot wait to share the whole trip with the world!

HAPPY: Are there any particular artists you’re really digging at the moment?

LOU: I’ve been into Jorja Smith, H.E.R, Tash Sultana I’m obsessed with, and Billie Eilish.

HAPPY: What’s next for Lou Ella beyond the new EP? Any other exciting plans in the works?

LOU: I’m releasing a lot of music this year and shooting videos and hopefully land my first festival. I’m also prepping some cool new sounds.

HAPPY: Cheers for the chat!
