Marc Bolan’s lifelong love for Marvel Comics led to a dream interview with Stan Lee.
In 1975, glam rock lord Marc Bolan was hosting the occasional interview on BBC radio program Today – a job that fortuitously led to him chatting to one of his idols: Stan Lee.
Bolan had long been a huge comic book fan, as Dangerous Minds note, even going as afar as referencing one of his favourite comic book heroes in T.Rex songs like Mambo Sun where he sang, “On a mountain range /I’m Doctor Strange for you.”
In 1976, Neil Tennant, latterly of Pet Shop Boys, interviewed Bolan about his love of Marvel Comics specifically, “I’ve been into Marvel since 1967. The Silver Surfer, in particular, was one I liked. Dr. Strange was another. At that time they were very weird compared to the other comics on the market, though they got more commercial since then and Stan Lee was a great writer.”
In the interview, from October 20th, 1975, Marc and Stan discuss Dr. Strange (one of Bolan’s favourite characters) and Dormammu, The Silver Surfer and his origin by Stan and Jack Kirby, THE TITANS Marvel UK comic book, and Angela Bowie as The Black Widow for a proposed TV series.
