Attention all Will Smith fans! It has officially been announced that the iconic ’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is undergoing a reboot, but hold your applause
Last year, a trailer by director Morgan Cooper did the rounds, racking up millions of views and prompting fans to rally behind a remake of the series. However, the trailer isn’t just another version of the light-hearted comedy that we know and love but, instead, a re-imagined gritty and suspenseful drama titled Bel-Air.
An edgy reboot of the iconic ’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is underway, with Will Smith helping to co-direct the new adaptation.
The story will focus on Will, a street-smart teen from West Philadelphia who, after getting into trouble one-too-many times, gets sent to live with his Aunty and Uncle in the affluent LA neighbourhood of Bel-Air. Sounds familiar right? Except, the latest instalment will take a serious deep-dive into the conflicts, struggles, emotions, and biases of what it means to be a Black man living in America today. The swagger of the original series will obviously be kept, with a cheeky nod to beloved episodes appearing every now and then.

The trailer caught the attention of the show’s original star Will Smith, who has jumped on board to help develop the series. Bel-Air has reportedly been in the works for nearly a year. “Morgan did a ridiculous trailer for Bel-Air,” Smith originally commented. “Brilliant idea – the dramatic version of The Fresh Prince for the next generation.”
The series will be made at Universal TV with Smith’s company Westbrook studios. It is unknown for now when and where the project will be available to watch.
