Deep Space Supergroop + Miners

Yes. Double yes. What are the chances that two of my favourite bands right now would be playing a show together tonight? I mean Sydney isn’t the largest city in the world, and a lot of the bands here are pretty average, so the chances are actually pretty high, but nonetheless it’s a pretty damn sweet opportunity for y’all.

Wollongong/Sydney four piece Miners are in desperate need of a proper write up here at Happy (we swear we’re on it!) and have been making their name around this fair city as the go-to support band for every half decent band who describe themselves as psychedelic, drone, fuzz, noise or whatever.

It’s like a stamp of approval – if you see Miners on the bill, you know the night is gonna be decent. Likewise, Deep Space Supergroop are another one of those great acts who I’ve been meaning to catch for about a year now, with their Dinosaur Jr. meets Pavement noise pop – real powerful stuff.

Tonight (23 May) you can catch these two near perfect bands at The World Bar in Kings Cross for the latest installment in the seemingly never ending legion of awesome acts that make up MUM, every Friday night.

Miners have recently given us the sleep paralysis anthem Soft Focus, a slowmotion ballad of completely washed out guitars and inaudible lyrics that would make any self respecting shoegaze fan flick the hair out of their eyes to double check that Soft Focus wasn’t actually released some 20 years ago. It’s featured as part of the coolest new mixtape by the coolest new label – Farmer and The Owl’s Beached Friends, which you can grab right here.

Deep Space Supergroop have also quite recently shot us a sample of their softer side, full of brilliant organs and meaningful lyrics. It’s a far cry from the double fuzz pedal onslaught that we got so well acquainted with after their self titled album dropped about this time last year, but Rob assures us that they’ll be hitting the studio on Saturday to track down something ‘a bit louder’. Listen to My Plane Went Flying below.

As always, MUM is free before 10pm, and only $5 after 10pm, (if you’re smart enough to jump on a guestlist). Hit up the Facebook page before tonight for some guestlist love and for the lowdown on everyone else playing – mostly DJ’s. Oh, and Fox & Fowl. Ha!
