Romantics say there’s beauty in everything, and we’re sure they mean it, to some extent. But for photographers Nikita Teryoshin and Max Slobodda, the sentiment drives their entire creative process. The duo work under the moniker Küchendienst Collective – German for “kitchen patrol” – and as their name suggests, their artistic domain is the kitchen: the least inspiring room in any house, right?

Over the course of a year, Nikita and Max worked on a series of photographs that capture the cosmic beauty of kitchen gunk: mould, spills, grease, grime, and food scraps. Their ability to turn this detritus into something you’d actually want to hang on your wall is stunning.
“One day we decided to cook a pretty tasty potato soup,” Nikita and Max explain on their website. “We searched for the pot and found it at the balcony and there was something inside of it. It was blue, yellow and sweating. We were fascinated of its visual appearance, before throwing the moldy spaghetti away, we took some pictures of them as a joke. After seeing the results, we decided to continue our documentation of things which once used to disgust us.
The most obvious side of mold is that its disgusting, unhealthy and ugly. But after we discovered the other side of the mold, we looked at it with the new eyes. We saw the geometry, strange colors and forms and a certain astethic. A picture of mold can appeal to many senses simultaneously.”
