Billy Goat showcases Mudwagon at their most vulnerable moment in time, yet still oozes with their undeniable attitude and psychedelic grittiness.
Mudwagon are a four-piece psychedelic rock collective hailing from the beautiful Bundjalung land of Byron Bay. They describe themselves as a feral bunch who have a knack for putting on the most outlandish live shows you have ever witnessed.
However, Mudwagon don’t just leave you in awe with their live shows, they also delve into various tunings with their music, with meticulous riffs that catapult you into a journey of darkness, which leaves you with tingling sensations that are reminiscent of a nightmare. These boys are eager to keep on pushing new sounds and emotional experiences for their listeners, and the best new example of that is their latest single, Billy Goat.
Billy Goat is a track that came together during one late Saturday, when two of Mudwagon’s members, Damo (lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist) and Maxxy (lead guitarist), stumbled across the chorus riff whilst jamming together. Luckily, they captured their session on Damo’s iPhone, especially the moment where the song was born through the hook, “Better tighten up that bootstrap Billy Goat”.
Damo told Happy, “I remember listening back and thought it had the same feeling as a song my friend and I were listening to at the time – ‘Little Star of Bethlehem ‘ by CAN – if you listen to that song, it’s pretty much about nothing.”
Billy Goat’s lyrics originally started out with the same writing style as Little Star of Bethlehem. However, over time, they delved into something much deeper than the band anticipated. The track explores themes of dealing with old memories that eat you up inside, as well as reflecting on mistakes made that were rooted in jealousy and fear.
