Celebrated American musician, poet and cartoonist David Berman has passed away at the age of 52, with his cause of death yet to be confirmed.

Berman founded Silver Jews in 1989 and was the lone constant member of the band up until their eventual disbanding in 2009. Between 2009-2017 he focused on writing poetry and essays, citing that this was an attempt to undo the damage that his father had done as a lobbyist for firearms and alcohol. Actual Air, a collection of his poetry, was released in 1999.

This year, Berman returned to music and formed Purple Mountains, debuting in May. The band released their eponymous first album in July. It is assumed that the band have dissolved since his death.

This tragic news was confirmed by his longtime record label, Drag City. Drag City released a statement saying, “A great friend and one of the most inspiring individuals we’ve known is gone. Rest easy, David.
