Papa Pilko and The Binrats premiere their video for How Long

It is often said that the best music videos are made in the desert, but I’d wager that the Aussie bushland and the ruins of a church would work just as well. Just throw in a black and white tone, foreboding rolling clouds and a man slicing open a longneck and proceeding to chug down said bevvie and you’ve got the makings of a sweet clip. Yo can watch such a clip here with the premier of How Long, the new single from Papa Pilko and The Binrats.

Desolate fields. Rolling clouds. Slicing open longnecks. All you need for a good music video, and you can watch that in Papa Pilko and The Binrats’ new clip How Long.

Papa Pilko and The Binrats hail from Sydney and play what they claim is voodoo soul and alternative country. A preposterous description, but once you have a gander at their clip for How Long voodoo soul becomes a very appropriate name for this band.  You need not look any further than Cyrus Pilko’s growling vocals to get this impression. It’s intimidating, yet manages to be alluring as well. He carefully croons his way throughout the verses before barking “How long?” in the chorus. It’s charismatic, and thankfully isn’t lost when translated to film.

The clip for How Long was directed by Pete Hawk & Mitch Payne. Like Pilko’s vocals it’s a little intimidating. There are a lot of low angle shots, making the band and the scenery around them a little more imposing. The scenery is beautiful, the fields of overgrown grass, thick shrubbery and the desolated ruins give the song a distinct outlaw/ wild west vibe. Too bad the boys didn’t release this a year earlier, there’s no doubt a song like this would’ve made it into an opening montage of Sons of Anarchy.

Pilko himself owns every frame he’s in, his wiry frame twisting and contorting as he bellows out the song. There’s something very Aussie about this clip. The landscape, the way the sun bears down, opening a beer with a freakin knife. The masculinity thrusts forward from the clip, the band members themselves taking on some strong posturing, spearheaded by their magnetic frontman. The raw nature of the track really comes to life in this setting, it feels strong, big and unrelenting.

If you’re keen to lap up more goodness from PPTB then you’re in luck. The band are setting out on tour at the end of this month ahead of the release of their debut album Till The End Of The Road in August. You can pre-order the album here.
