Pixar introduces its first lesbian character in upcoming film ‘Onwards’

For the first time in Disney Pixar’s history, they have officially introduced a lesbian character.

This comes with the trailer for the production company’s upcoming film Onward.

In the upcoming Pixar film Onward, it has been revealed that a cyclops police officer will be the production company’s first lesbian character.

The character, a cyclops police officer called Officer Specter, will be voiced by Lena Waithe. The film itself centres around two young elves, played by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, who discover a wizard’s magical staff. It is made clear that Officer Specter identifies as queer in a line of dialogue from the film, “My girlfriend’s daughter got me pulling my hair out.”

The films director, Dan Scanlon, described how the film was meant to be a representation of the world we live in now. “It’s a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world,” he said in a recent interview.

One of the producers on the film, Kori Rae, explained that, “The scene, when we wrote it, was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit, and that’s what we wanted.” Even though it is a step forward in terms of representation, it isn’t by any means a leap. This is still a first for the company. Let us hope that the production company that has produced so many magical moments can continue on this path of representation in their films.
