PREMIERE: Escape the suburbs with Flowermouth in Urethane

“Raw, hardcore, dirty, brazen, recalcitrant, abrasive”. That’s what has been said about Perth’s Flowermouth, and I should know. I said it about a week ago. Well, get that bubble wrap and cotton wool ready because the lads are back, in better definition than ever. After receiving a range of cryptic clues, a series of stakeouts and a climactic secretive meeting on a park bench, we’ve finally managed to acquire the secret USB of truth that holds within it Flowermouth’s shiny new video for their song Urethane.

Flowermouth Urethane premiere

Sick and tired of the angst surrounding suburban life? Well get your flux capacitator ready kid, it’s time to escape with Flowermouth in Urethane.

In the video, we follow our plucky adventurer I shall affectionately call Nosering. He’s got plans to make a flux capacitor helmet thingy. If being a bit of nerdlinger doesn’t give it away, our Nosering is a bit of a loser. He watches really old footage of scientific experiments in his shed-cum-bedroom, he eats fruit loops out of a bowl his dog licked (gross!) and he hates giving his mum, the woman who’s given her all to raise him right, even an itty bitty kiss.

After downing a solid carton of Master’s Iced Coffee (I actually have WA mates who swear by this stuff) bought at a Dockers-supporting milk bar, our hero gets to work scavenging electronic equipment for his project. Sure enough ol’ Nosey makes his pretty sweet-looking contraption, and has the time of his life rocking out with the Flowermouth lads. The action then fades out for a pretty shameless plug of the band’s upcoming 7” release of Urethane.

Filmed and edited by Jordan Edenm, the video captures the essence of Flowermouth, which is a desire to escape from the mundane. The boys rock hard and loose, as if trying to raise to the ground the monotony of suburban life through their angst. Frontman Cameron Murphy has said the song  “Strays between personal perspective and hyper exaggerated happenstance“, which is reminiscent of a certain ring-nosed young man.

Bit of warning though, it’s not just Nosering that can’t handle the sheer looseness of Urethane. I’ve passed out from rocking too much every time I’ve watched the video. It’s sort of like the musical version of that Monty Python Deadly Joke sketch. But in a good way.
