As we say goodbye to winter and head towards the warmer months of the year, a few things come to mind. The perfect summer day should consist of drinking beers in the sun and sun-baking on hot sand until the late hours of the afternoon, and after all this hard work, kick back with another beer and some sweet tunes. Basically, it should feel like one of those Corona ads where ridiculously good looking people sprawl themselves across the beach with enough buckets of beer to last a good couple of days.
And all these summer vibes would be perfectly accompanied by Jack R Reilly’s new single Submerged, which on the surface oozes chilled out and carefree undertones, but takes inspiration by something much deeper and thought-provoking than beer and summer.
With mellow vocals that will make you quiver and a striking story of confronting one’s self, Jack R Reilly paints a sweetly twisted picture on Submerged.
Submerged was produced by Jonathan Tooke, and was recorded in his Wollongong house. The track was inspired by the book and movie of the same name Candy, which revolves around drugs, love, self-destruction and prostitution, as well as, in Reilly’s words “Some creepy people who live in the building I live in”.
To follow on with this dark theme, Reilly said “It’s sort of about the feeling of knowing something’s bad for you, but you can’t stop doing it”. It is on a second listen, when you really pay attention to the lyrics, that a haunting essence comes through. The repetition of the line “Submerged so beautifully” will make your brain tick over, and try to come up with your own meaning of these eerily stunning words.
Are they trying to convey a dark, confronting story, or are they the beginning of the path away from the bad towards the light? Either way, Submerged will definitely paint a picture in your mind, and has a quality that will make you feel like you’re floating away. Through the striking instrumentation and Reilly’s soulful and body-quivering vocals, this track is so simple and peaceful, yet so intense and dark. It’s stunning melodies will bring pleasure to your mind far after the blissful sounds have made their way into your ears.
With the release of Submerged, this will see Jack R Reilly get back to the drawing (or writing) board to continue writing and recording material for a new EP, that will no doubt be warmly welcomed and received upon its arrival next year.
