PREMIERE: Lonely nights in black and white: Hazlett mourns inevitable loss in Couldn’t Be Done

Rising indie songwriter Hazlett really seems to have his head in the right place. Everything he releases, every little part of him that he puts out into the world undergoes vigorous curation, and the video for Couldn’t Be Done is further proof.

In February Hazlett released Honey, Where Is My Home, his sonic debut and part one of a proposed EP series set to introduce the world to his output in a major way.

Couldn’t Be Done is the first video cut from that dangerously beautiful EP, and it sits damn comfortably behind his haunting vocal lines, ambient musicality and hymns of loss.

Hazlett hits the mark on Couldn’t Be Done, a downtempo masterpiece that continues a streak of excellence from the emerging artistic force.

This clip follows the song’s understated expressionism, magnetic in its restraint. Initially as endearingly quiet as an Oliver Tank song, Hazlett’s lyricism takes the forefront for the beginning two thirds of the track.

When the bridge comes in, a swirling maelstrom of dreamlike synths swell to the front of the mix, the video finally bursting into colour as a dramatic compliment.

It’s more than obvious at this stage; we’re witnessing the early incarnations of a grand musical plan from the budding star Hazlett. As for what’s ahead, it’s up to him to keep the quality of his work at such a high level for the remainder of his debut series.

But from what we’ve seen so far, that’s hardly going to be a problem.
