Southern Sydney duo Project String Theory hand over their fresh new EP

Project String Theory is an indie alt pop duo from Southern Sydney, who have just dropped an exciting new record to really introduce their sound to the world.

Titled In Your Opinion, the record draws upon the well loved sounds coming from the likes of Twenty One Pilots mixed with the traditional pop sounds of Arctic Monkeys and The Beatles. With multiple influences being intertwined, this record was born of a great love for sound and storytelling.

Project String Theory

Project String Theory is an interesting mix of pop influenced songwriting and alternative vocals. It’s characteristically unique and very much their own.

With a quirky aesthetic and a mix of bass, guitar, ukelele and vocals, Project String Theory consists of old friends Sam and Lachlan. Sam brings to the table her more contemporary sounds and experimental harmonies to the table, while Lachlan’s love for an edgier perspective makes for an exciting twist.

“Lachlan usually records some demos and sends them through to me for lyrics!”, says Sam. “We have a shared Google Doc that we use and has all our lyrics for past and future songs as well as chords and possible ideas on it.”

“Yeah, I usually come up with some chord progressions or riffs and save them as demos to send to Sam”, shares Lachlan.

I reckon that our difference in music influences adds a lot of diversity to our sound, for example, use of slide guitar in F L O W E R S and some rap in Sky In The Sky!”

Their eight track EP is a collection of original songs, all with an upbeat poppy flair, strong bass lines and distorted wispy vocals. Endearingly imperfect, there is a refreshing friendly quality to the music of Project String Theory. Sam’s vocals oddly bring those of Courtney Barnett to the surface, that plus a melodic mix of Missy Higgins; a distinctly Aussie drawl with a sweet inflection.

There is a dope little drop into spoken word which made the record really stand out, unexpectedly creative and wildly interesting. When asked about the interlude, Sam was happy to reveal that it was far from planned.

“This is pretty funny! We actually left the microphone on record and didn’t realise it was still on! We thought it was so funny that we would keep it in at the end and layer some more recordings on top of it!”

“We left the microphone on and we were just clowning around”, continued Lachlan, “and it was the funniest after we realised we left it recording! We left it in there cause we liked it so much and makes us laugh every time!”

Really strong on the narrative front, opening track Melt Away is a really banger to kick it all off. While it’s clear that the record was produced and recorded with limited experience behind it, the EP In Your Opinion is earnest and honest.

And there looks to be more where that honesty came from. Their next output is set to launch their visual artistry to the next level – a self-directed documentary focusing on the band.

“This was actually Lachlan’s idea!” Sam shared. “We had a small launch party for our band in early February this year and we got a heap of video footage from it. Lachlan thought it would be a cool idea to put some of that together and make a documentary! We’ve just finished recording our visuals, and want it to have a old, home-video kinda feel.”

“I thought, why not use this and tell the story of the band?”, added Lachlan.

Look out for more music and live dates from Project String Theory soon – this humble pair are just getting started.
