Samantha Josephine delivers a sonic reverie on new single ‘The Flower Scene’

Part sunlit lullaby, part soft-sung poem, Samatha Josephine’s new single The Flower Scene is altogether entrancing.

Samantha Josephine has delivered the sonic equivalent of a carefree bike ride on her new single, The Flower Scene.

Opening with the rustic twang of guitar and sporadic percussion, the track immediately oozes warmth, with a leisurely, slow-rock tempo that could easily be likened to an indie lullaby.

There’s a folksy energy to The Flower Scene, which coasts on a meandering groove and leaves ample room for shimmering guitar moments.

These fuzzy, sun-drenched licks add richness and texture to the production, with the subtle clash of cymbals only amplifying its daydream quality.

While all the staples of soft indie rock are there, from the surfy dazzle of the instrumentation to the finger-picked acoustics, that’s not to say The Flower Scene is without rougher edges.

There’s a blissful unpredictability to the production, with some flairs arriving off-tempo or appearing discordant, to the point where the single at times feels like a masterclass in stream of consciousness songwriting.

Perhaps the main drawcard of The Flower Scene is Josephine’s wholly unique vocal performance, which proves itself to be an instrument all unto itself.

Soft-spoken and veering toward a talky delivery, Josephine’s timbre is disarmingly honest and intimate, as if listeners are right there in the booth with her.

Flitting between languid mumbles and punchier moments of harmony, the vocals remain an engaging throughline and contribute to the tracks sonic reverie.

The single is accompanied by an official visualiser, which intesperses clips of her insturmentation and offers a peak into her creative process.

The Flower Scene adds to a long string of singles released by Josephine this year, with her most recent effort, Subterfuge, arriving last month. Beyond that, the NZ artist says she has “a lot of tracks up my sleeve.”

In any case, The Flower Scene alone is sure to kickstart what feels like a breakout moment for Josephine.
