Sampha delivers ‘Lahai’ a dose of pure musical genius

Blowing our minds once again, Sampha returns with “LAHAI,” a dose of pure musical genius.

If you’ve been a devoted fan of Sampha, quietly or not, ever since his debut “Process” and the unforgettable highlight that was his Tiny Desk performance, then you’re in for a treat.

We’re excited to share that Sampha is back in the spotlight, announcing today the full details of his highly-anticipated sophomore album, “LAHAI,” set to release on October 20th via Young / Remote Control.

The album’s name, “LAHAI,” carries a heartfelt significance as it’s drawn from Sampha’s paternal grandfather’s name, which also happens to be his own middle name.

It’s a fitting choice for an album that delves into life’s enigmatic wonders, capturing the exquisite turmoil we experience as we navigate the cycle of life and ponder the great beyond.

Comprising 14 tracks, “LAHAI” marks a departure from Sampha’s previous work.

It’s a collective effort, featuring contributions from a lineup of Sampha’s closest friends, peers, and collaborators, including Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey (from Kokoroko), Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson (of black midi), Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves, and Kwake Bass.

This shift towards collaboration reveals a new facet of Sampha’s artistry—a exploration of the myriad ways in which human connections shape our lives and connect us to something greater than ourselves.

The latest single, ‘Only,’ which is accompanied by a music video directed by Dexter Navy in collaboration with Sampha himself. ‘Only’ showcases a rejuvenated Sampha, delivering his melodious vocals over a hip-hop-inflected beat, co-produced by El Guincho.

It’s a glimpse into the album’s overarching theme—an appreciation of the human condition, a celebration of life’s journey, and an acknowledgment of its inherent beauty.

While “Process” saw Sampha navigating his place in the world amidst shadows of grief and loss, “LAHAI” represents a shift towards radical acceptance and an embrace of the joys inherent in being human.

It’s an artistic evolution that captures the beauty of the journey itself. So, mark your calendars and prepare for Sampha’s next musical chapter as he unveils “LAHAI,” where the magic of existence takes center stage.
