Silver Dapple

The silver dapple gene is a dilution gene that affects the black base coat colour of horses. I don’t know what the chances of this having anything to do with the Canadian band of the same name. I’m going to go with slim to none, maybe…

Another weird thing: these guys are making music from the future, too. According to their Bandcamp page, their four-track cassette, I Hate My Birthday, was released on April 5, 2014. I’m writing this on April 3… But more on their potential sorcery later.

Fresh out of Montreal are Silver Dapple, whose brand spanking new cassette, I Hate My Birthday, is equal parts sweet and sour.

If you’re a fan of youthful, fuzzy, almost-pop-but-not garage-y shit, held together with Canadian accented female vocals, then you’re in luck! This four piece are from different corners of British Colombia, but met and formed the band in Montreal. Vocalist Emily Deimert brings a sweetness to the otherwise quite frenetic sound.

Her throaty, intimate lyrics are haunting in a way that reminds me of this fucked up book I read in year 8 called Death By Chocolate. It was about a bored American cheerleader type, who went crazy and decided to poison her highschool via spiked baked goods, or something like that. The point is that I Hate My Birthday sounds popp-y, but it has a dark, brittle edge to it that is both unnerving and supremely satisfying.

Silver Dapple’s previous release is their English Girlfriend LP (2011). The 11 tracks sound pretty similar to their newer work, if slightly more pop focused. Nevertheless, both are worth checking out. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, you can catch Silver Dapple live at all the coolest Canadian hangouts. Also, check out their sick clip to (Pauses) here.
