The Simpsons fake ‘Waterworld’ game is now an actual game

The Simpsons 20 second riff on the flop that was Waterworld has become a game IRL.

The 90s post-apocalyptic action film starring Kevin Costner is infamous for being a major flop. Known for costing the studios a cool 175 mil to make,  it tanked at the box office due to bad reviews, and an over-inflated budget which copped a lot of flack at the time.

The Simpsons made a joke about it in season 8’s episode “The Springfield Files” an X-Files crossover, and now that joke has become a fully legit video game

In The Simpsons episode we briefly see Millhouse (Bart’s best bud) loading a large stack of quarters into a Waterworld arcade machine. 40 to be exact. Playing as Kevin Costner’s Mariner, he takes one step and the game abruptly ends, prompting him to insert another 40 quarters.

Indie game developer and Twitch streamer Macaw45 has put together a full game inspired by that 20-second scene. And apparently, it’s very good, and best of all, it’s free.

The game features:

A full-action adventure with multiple areas
Battle through the atoll, traverse the ocean, board the Deez and find dry land!

Find and use various items
Trade your dirt, get the tomato plant, build the water purifier, and much, much more!

Multiple boss fights
Fight the Nord, battle a Whalefin, face off against the Deacon, and beyond!

Macaw45 says he has always been a huge fan of fake video games that were seen in The Simpsons, and the Waterworld one had always stuck out to him as a kid. Initially, it was planned to only be a short game, but it quickly developed into something bigger,  becoming a fully fleshed-out game of much greater scope than he ever expected.
