Sister Smooth All Star Party

So here’s something I learned today – there’s a pub under the escalators near Harry’s Cafe De Wheels in Chinatown/Haymarket that does live music. It’s called the Palace Hotel, it has a capacity of 200 people, it’s beer list ain’t shabby and it’s been right under our noses this entire time. What are the odds, huh?

schoolgirl report

Saturday night (15th March) will see the venue’s stage graced by School Girl Report – a Bateman’s Bay duo who make distressingly low fidelity Australiana. Their LP Success Is Dating found an audience with those who are familiar with the local post-punk aesthetic – think Primitive Calculators and you’re not far off the mark. The decayed-cassette sound might not be for everyone though, the album delving deep into the experimental noise category, sometimes a few tracks at a time. For tomorrow night though, the duo are transforming field recordings into chopped up, clipped out club music, apparently.

What’s most thrilling about this show though might not be the fact that it’s at a venue I’ve never heard of, nor that School Girl Report are playing choppy, ambient club music. It’s the incredible, read, incredible lineup of artists that are on the bill for Saturday night. Let’s just get it out of the way and make a little list, shall we?

Day Ravies – You know, that super cool dream/psych/pop band we interviewed a while back?

Rainbow Chan – The ever unusual Hong Kong via Sydney electronic solo artist

Circular Keys – Divas of delay and calming, rolling tunes

Thomas William – Get hooked on some almost maybe sometimes dancable tunes

Ruined Fortune – Nick Warnock (BWBB) plus Angie (Circle Pit) equals filthy rock and roll

Lovely Head – Vivian Huynh from No Art presents unique vocal delivery + sex pop

Teenage Moustache – Featuring Bare Grillz drummer + the y202 records boss, Teen Mo’s present their first ever Aus show.

So hopefully there are some familiar names in there for y’all to gawk at. Seriously, there are so many people from so many different bands playing this one night that there’s a decent chance you’ll personally know someone playing. Sydney’s a small town. It’s $10 on the door, event will commence at 7pm and the party won’t stop till 2am.
