Last night Courtney Barnett took home the J Award for Australian Album of the Year for her debut LP Sometime I Sit And Think, And Sometime I Just Sit. Since then there has been a considerable backlash to Barnie’s win, with dissatisfied punters taking to socials to air their grievances.
There have been a few “RIP Aus music” comments, as well as calls that the J’s are simply sucking up to the ‘hipster’ market, and even that Barnett’s win is a slight against fellow nominees Gang of Youths and Tame Impala.
Let’s set the record straight, there are some seriously fucked up comments in this Facebook thread, many that aren’t warranted at all. Frankly it’s a little sad to see such misguided statements made in an attempt to spread bad vibes. So let’s take a closer look at some of them and decipher what they’re really saying.
Firstly, it’s spelled pretentious. And we assume you know she’s pretentious from meeting her in person right? Because we have, and she’s one of the most humble humans on the planet.
Was there an “I hate Courtney poll” that we missed? (also see a doctor about that ear bleeding thing).
Does this mean the people at Pitchfork also work for triple J?
Huh?
Again with the over the top statements. Clearly some people haven’t heard Warwick Capper’s venture into the musical world before.
C’mon guys, lets not be dicks about this. If you don’t like Courtney that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean you can throw a tantrum. Only toddlers throw tantrums.
