Sophie Breton talks ‘Love Is Enough’, breakup anthems and life as a 20-something

“It needs to be an emotional wrecking song,” Sophie Breton tells us of the force behind her latest single Love Is Enough.

Nailing the bittersweetness of life experiences is no small feat, but Sophie Breton managed to do just that with her latest single Love Is Enough.

A melancholic reflection on the current state of love and romance, the track brims with a deep reverence for craft and the Canadian artist’s enchanting vocals.

HAPPY: What are you up to today?

SOPHIE: It’s currently Friday for me so I’m trying to wind down the week, drinking coffee and doing some stuff related to music projects.

HAPPY: What is the music scene like in your neck of the words?

SOPHIE: The music scene to me is a place where people from everywhere and from different generations can be together and share a unique moment. The music scene brings people together like nothing else.

HAPPY: What does a typical day look like when recording a song like Is Love Enough?

SOPHIE: I think I never had a routine when it’s about creating music. It’s always different because when I feel too prepared, I feel like everything feels wrong and not inspiring.

“Is Love Enough” like other songs, was really created among couple ideas around conversations I had. I was writing it progressively on my phone over a few months, I think it was during summer 2023 but let it down because I wasn’t sure of it.

But then when autumn came, I was back in studio and it felt like the right moment to record it.

HAPPY: Pop rock has been enjoying a renaissance in the music scene of late. What is it about the genre that you think has attracted more popularity?

SOPHIE: Oh that’s great question! Honestly, I think that music is something that flows through time. Pop rock is filled with emotions and energy, it’s something we can’t get tired of and that brings humans together.

HAPPY: Any pop rock artists that you are inspired by?

SOPHIE: Huge fan of The Beatles and the way their music changed through years. My family initiated me when I was really young to The Beatles and I think it’s influencing me a lot.

They have so many different songs, with different emotions and stories behind it, I admire that and relate to this.

HAPPY: Is Love Enough is somewhat of a breakup anthem. Why is this topic particularly inspiring for you?

SOHPIE: You’re right, Is Love Enough sounds like a breakup anthem. Honestly in the last year, the subject I’ve talked the most about with friends was love and how rough and complicated it felt these days.

I had friends breaking up from long term relationships thinking it was their person but love faded away unexpectedly… Or friends being stuck in expectation and torned by deceptions.

All those conversation lead me to write Is Love Enough. Thought it would be a ballad but I was like hell nah, it needs to be an emotional wrecking song, something listeners can scream their lungs out in order to let all these mixed feelings out.

HAPPY: It’s always interesting to hear about single selection. How do you go about choosing which songs to preview an album with?

SOPHIE: Such a bittersweet process! I can’t lie, sometimes there’s too many doubts in my head about the pressure of making “the right choice”.

I try to put away the songs for a few weeks and then come back to them with another perspective, it’s helping me to see clearer in my decisions. It’s crazy how a few weeks can change your appreciation or opinion on a song.

HAPPY: What can listeners expect from your forthcoming album?

SOPHIE: Being in my twenties right now, I can’t lie, it’s tinted by my twenties but also by general themes in a way people can identify with it.

It’s also very much tinged with topics that I discuss with friends or loved ones. It is inspired by a lot of conversations.

HAPPY: What makes you happy?

SOPHIE: Honestly, the simple things! Coffee, sun, music and my family!
