“A celebration of letting go”: TEEN share their hypnotic new video for Only Water

In youth, death does not hold proximity.” There’s something strangely euphoric about this line when framed by the glistening pop sounds of TEEN’s latest single Only Water. The Brooklyn-based sibling trio – made up of Teeny, Lizzie, and Katherine Lieberson – have just announced their fourth studio album Good Fruit, and Only Water is our first taste.

As the band dance through deceptively bright and upbeat ruminations on loss, they navigate some pretty weighty subject matter. “Only Water tells the story of my experience of my father’s sickness and death,” Teeny says of the track.

With the announcement of their upcoming fourth album Good Fruit, Brooklyn-based trio TEEN have unveiled a hypnotic new video for Only Water.

It explores the final moments that I had with him, as well as the processing of the loss of a parent. As it has been many years since his death, my relationship to losing him has changed,” she continues.

I have been thinking a lot about the idea of possession and how it can even exist once someone has died. The song questions this principle; if we are all water, can’t I have you? Can I be you? Which, abstractly, is a celebration of letting go. The freedom within oneness as well as nothingness.

With their hypnotic blend of dreamy vocals and glassy production, TEEN present a dynamic brand of synth-pop that feels simultaneously wrenching and uplifting. As their voices weave seamlessly into one another, the trio balance gracefully somewhere between grief and elation.

Good Fruit is set to be released March 1st, and judging by what we’ve heard so far, I think we can safely expect plenty more quality material from TEEN. Though for now, do yourself a favour and watch the new video for Only Water above.
