The Stilts chat their new single Lotus Eater

It’s been a couple of weeks now since we first heard The Stilts’ new single Lotus Eater, but for that entire time, we haven’t stopped spinning it.

So fresh off the track’s release, we caught up the band to chat all about it, the Brisbane music scene, and what the future holds.

Hot off the release of their incredible latest track Lotus Eater, we caught up with Brisbane-based outfit The Stilts for a chat.

HAPPY: Hey, how’s it going? What are you up to at the moment?

THE STILTS: Yeah good mate I’m just watching ‘Friends’ with my dog….and of course messaging you.

HAPPY: We’re loving Lotus Eater! How does it feel having the track out there in the world?

THE STILTS: It’s always exciting to release new music. So yeah it feels pretty good to show it to the world.

HAPPY: Could you tell us a bit about the song?

THE STILTS: It’s about living in a materialistic world. It was written with the intention of being a little sarcastic, bringing up some truths and trying to make catchy melodies.

HAPPY: You’ve got a few releases under your belts now… do you feel like you approached the writing/recording of this new single differently to past material at all?

THE STILTS: The production was definitely approached differently. I think by learning from past mistakes there were just different decisions made in this production which I think brought the best out in the song. The intention was actually to record this one in a studio but instead decided to give recording and mixing another try inside the bedroom and then send it off to our mates at paradox productions to get mastered.

HAPPY: We’ve been noticing a lot of really great bands coming out of Brissy lately… what’s the go? Is there something in the water?

THE STILTS: We think it can be wrapped by up the amount of venues opening up in Brisbane which attracts a more diverse amount of bands that encourage each other, making the scene more accessible for everyone, which then helps influence each other to be the best they can be.

HAPPY: Are there any particular bands you’ve been seeking inspiration from lately?

THE STILTS: Locally, bands like the Baby Breaks have a great live presence, Ben Tenison melt our hearts, and recently I saw a band called Big Dinner that really hit home for me. To be honest, we all listen to a very diverse amount of music from Smith Street Band, Tame Impala, Radiohead, Foxygen, Billie Eilish, Sticky Fingers, Unknown Mortal Orchestra… the list goes on. It could be production qualities, certain melodies, beat patterns and whatever else. We just love listening to music and then, of course, making it.

HAPPY: What’s next for The Stilts? Any other exciting plans in the works?

THE STILTS: There’s a bunch of new songs in the works one of which has already been recorded and mixed. We have discussed a new EP but we’re just taking our time at this stage.

HAPPY: Cheers for the chat!

THE STILTS: No, thank you.
