Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Tim Allan laments the heartache of long distance relationships on new acoustic pop ballad By Your Side.
Tim Allan has released By Your Side, the second single to be lifted from the Melbourne singer-songwriter’s upcoming album Songs I Used To Busk With. The pop-rock track serves as a culmination of Allan’s deft lyricism and guitar handiwork, exploring the heartache of long-distance relationships and incorporating a meticulous guitar solo. Atop backing saxophones and a catchy bassline, Allan sings of losing “all those hopes and all those dreams of you and me.”
Allan’s raw vocals speak to the track’s honest delivery, as the singer laments missing out on hand-in-hand walks and “every movie that made us weep” in a partner’s absence. For all its lovelorn lyrics, however, the message of By Your Side is ultimately a hopeful one, as Allan vows to keep the memories of a romance alive. This newfound conviction is reflected in the sonics, with the introduction of gritty guitar strums and punchier vocals.
It’s the sort of acoustic pop balladry reminiscent of a Rex Orange County or James Blunt number, complete with candid songwriting seemingly ripped from the pages of a personal diary entry. “Though you and I are split across the tide,” Allan croons towards the end of the song, “I’m by your side.” Speaking of the single’s message in a press statement, Allan said: “The track is a pop-rock bop about two lovers keeping together when apart.”
By Your Side follows last year’s Juliet as the second preview of Songs I Used To Busk With. Fittingly, the debut EP will comprise a collection of tracks Allan once performed on the streets of Melbourne, and will no-doubt embody the singer’s honest take on love, heartbreak and everything in between. By Your Side will be accompanied by an official music video set for release soon, with the third and final single Take It All Away due to arrive ahead of the EP’s release.
By Your Side, which was written by Allan and mixed by Crucible Records, will celebrate its arrival with an official single launch at Melbourne’s The Workers Club on March 5. Marking Allan’s first-ever headline show, the launch event will feature support acts and fellow Melbourne artists Saphra and Yzzy Jade.
