Takudzwa Victoria Maidza AKA Tkay Maidza‘s has just dropped her new track. This sassy chick from Adelaide is back with Finish Them, produced by British producer Bok Bok (founder of London based label Night Slugs) and we’re feeling kind of grateful to have some stronger female rap game than Iggy-Igs.
Tkay Maidza’s latest track Finish Them has the same vibrancy and command of U-Huh with a taste of the dark side. The relentless beat drives this song off the grid!
Born in Zimbabwe and raised in Australia, Tkay Maidza’s songs reach out and punch you in the face/ears. If you’re looking for a tune to send an aggressive email to Finish Them is probably going to satisfy your auditory needs. This track follows her previous single U-Huh and whilst I’m missing that catchy, carefree chanting and the softness of that track, it seems that Maidza’s stepping over into Azealia’s territory with this new one.
As mentioned, the mating of Tkay’s flow with British producer Bok Bok’s beats gives this track an odd mix of subtlety and intensity not previously showcased. Brontosaurus might have been the least subtle track of this year (and we loved her for it!) but the punch in the face from Finish Them is less of a thuggish tooth-smacker and more of a paralysing grasp sort of situation. It’s bass-lines are smooth, those kicks are on point and the whole affair is entirely pleasant enough to overlook that shotgun reloading sample.
Finish Them is a gnarly jam to walk angrily to but I for one am hoping there’s some more summery, lighter tones akin to U-Huh that are in the works. I’m guessing they’ll be out just in time for the summer!
You can catch Tkay Maidz as part of the Listen Out string of shows, hitting Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth later this month, also featuring Flume, Chet, Four-Tet, Shlohmo and many more! Hit up the festival website for more info + tickets.
