Tony Mundine, the Indigenous Australian boxing icon who shattered boundaries and inspired generations, has passed away at 75 following a heart attack on Sunday.
The Baryulgil-born warrior, who famously challenged Carlos Monzon for the world middleweight crown in 1974, carved a legacy that transcended sport, becoming the first Australian to fight across four different classes.
His influence echoed through his son Anthony, a world champion in his own right, and grandson Rahim, who claimed victory just last week.
Anthony, broken and in transit from Saudi Arabia, posted a raw tribute: “Dad I love you man, may Allah bless your soul.” With 80 wins, 64 by knockout, Mundine’s record tells only part of the story.
From his Redfern gym to the global stage, he stood tall, a proud Bundjalung man who fought not just opponents, but for respect, for country, and for his people’s place in the sun.
