Weezer is in their ‘Golden’ age

Twenty albums in and Weezer has still got it.

On Friday, Rivers Cuomo and Co. released their latest self-titled project, already dubbed the Gold Album due to its cover art.

Weezer is faithful to the ’90s alternative sound that fans know and love, while bringing a fresh conceptual sound to the discography.

Coming off the back of the ‘Voyage to the Blue Planet’ 30th anniversary tour in 2024, the four-piece band returned to the studio in California to deliver 10 brand new tracks.

The Gold Album was born from living-room brainstorming sessions over the course of four months, leaving fans with a project that feels both authentically new and comfortably nostalgic.

The album starts with ‘Say Yes’, a charismatic pop-rock-leaning track that explores the pressure to sell out in the music industry.

The fifth track, ‘CEO’, pays homage to the Blue Album, exploring frustration and gratitude in relation to fan favourites remaining attached to old hits like ‘The Sweater Song’.

The tracklist also features indie rock band Wednesday on ‘We Might as Well Be Strangers’, with frontwoman Karly Hartzman delivering a powerful verse alongside Cuomo.

Wednesday brings a unique blend of country and indie rock to the scene that serves as a charismatic addition to the Gold Album.

Kenny Beats and Klas Åhlund co-produced the project, with Blume striving to put out “the most violent Weezer album ever.”

Kenny Beats is best known for his hip-hop production for artists such as Denzel Curry and Rico Nasty, but ventured into the world of rock with Geese last year.

Mike Jones’ album cover art has kept with the self-titled Weezer album tradition of using a predominant colour, this time metallic gold embossed with custom symbols made to represent each member of the band.

This is the first time, however, that the members themselves do not appear on a self-titled album cover.

‘Weezer: The Gathering Tour’ kicks off on September 8th in Sacramento, California.
